Pomodoro Timer
Stay focused during writing sessions with the Pomodoro Timer. Work in focused intervals with scheduled breaks to maintain productivity without burnout.
What is the Pomodoro Timer?
The Pomodoro Timer helps you write in focused intervals. The classic Pomodoro Technique uses 25-minute work sessions followed by 5-minute breaks. StorytellerOS lets you customize these durations to match your writing rhythm.
Tip
Short, focused sessions are often more productive than marathon writing sessions. The timer helps you maintain focus and gives your brain regular rest breaks.
Using the Timer
Starting a Session
- Find the Pomodoro Timer on your dashboard or in the writing interface
- Click Start to begin a work session
- Write until the timer sounds
- Take your break when prompted
- Repeat as needed

Customizing the Timer
You can customize the timer to match your preferences:
Work Duration
Set how long each focused work session lasts:
- Range: 5 to 60 minutes
- Default: 25 minutes (classic Pomodoro)
- Common alternatives: 15 minutes (shorter), 45 minutes (longer), 90 minutes (deep work)
Break Duration
Set how long each break lasts:
- Range: 1 to 30 minutes
- Default: 5 minutes (classic Pomodoro)
- Tip: Longer work sessions usually benefit from longer breaks
Alarm Sounds
Choose from five different alarm sounds to signal when a session ends:
- Bell — Classic bell chime
- Digital — Electronic beep
- Gentle — Soft notification tone
- Chord — Pleasant musical chord
- Whistle — Short whistle sound
Tip
Try different alarm sounds to find one that is noticeable but not jarring. The goal is to gently remind you to take a break, not startle you.
Auto-Start Breaks
When enabled, the timer automatically starts your break when a work session ends. When disabled, you need to manually start the break timer.
- Enabled: Work session ends → Break timer starts automatically
- Disabled: Work session ends → You click "Start Break" when ready
Integration with Writing Sessions
The Pomodoro Timer can integrate with Writing Sessions to automatically track your writing time:
- Start a Pomodoro → Automatically creates a writing session
- Track word count during the session
- Link the session to a specific title or chapter
- View session statistics on your dashboard
Note
To enable automatic writing session tracking, make sure you have selected a title or chapter before starting the Pomodoro timer.
Display Variants
The Pomodoro Timer is available in different sizes:
- Default — Full-featured timer with all controls
- Compact — Smaller version with essential controls
- Widget — Minimal display showing just time and start/stop
Tips for Effective Pomodoros
For Drafting
- Use 25-45 minute sessions
- Turn off notifications during work sessions
- Set a word count goal for each session
- Do not worry about quality — just get words down
For Editing
- Use 45-60 minute sessions (editing requires deeper focus)
- Edit one chapter per session
- Take notes during breaks about patterns you notice
For Planning
- Use shorter 15-20 minute sessions
- Focus on one specific planning task (outline, character notes, etc.)
- Use breaks to let ideas simmer
Common Questions
What if I need to stop mid-session?
Life happens! Use the Pause button if you need a quick interruption. For longer interruptions, it is often better to reset and start fresh when you return.
Should breaks be longer after multiple sessions?
The classic Pomodoro Technique suggests taking a longer 15-30 minute break after every 4 work sessions. StorytellerOS does not enforce this automatically, but you can manually adjust your break duration.
Can I use the timer without tracking writing sessions?
Yes! The Pomodoro Timer works independently. Writing session tracking is optional and only activates if you have linked it to a title or chapter.
Where are my timer settings saved?
Your Pomodoro Timer settings (work duration, break duration, alarm sound, auto-start) are saved to your account and sync across devices. They are stored securely in the database and persist across sessions.
